WHAT IS PULMONARY HYPERTENSION (You Sabi PH?)
Pulmonary hypertension is a general term used to describe high blood pressure in the lungs, it is different from the regular hypertension also known as systemic blood pressure.
In regular hypertension, the arteries throughout the body are constricted. In pulmonary hypertension, the pulmonary arteries, which are the blood vessels responsible for transporting blood from the heart to the lungs are affected.
Pulmonary hypertension is a rare chronic disease in which the pulmonary arteries become narrowed and thickened, making it it difficult for blood to flow through and as a result causing the heart to work harder. Over time, the hearts become enlarge, weakens and it can lead to the development of right heart failure.
Pulmonary hypertension affects people of all ages, races and ethnic background.
ABOUT WALK4PH
Walk4PH is Nigeria’s only walkathon and an initiative of cardiac community aimed at raising awareness of pulmonary hypertension, a chronic condition that affects the heart and lungs. It is characterized by elevated blood pressure in the arteries in the lungs. This often-misunderstood disease places a significant burden on the heart, which can eventually lead to heart failure. Pulmonary hypertension is frequently misdiagnosed as other respiratory and cardiovascular conditions, making awareness paramount for early detection and improved care.
Walk4PH commemorates World Pulmonary Hypertension Day, which is held annually on the 5th of May.
The inaugural edition took place on May 11th, 2019, at the National Stadium Surulere.
The second edition, themed ‘Shine a Light on PH,’ was held from May 22nd to 29th, 2021. You can read more about it here.
